Second Evening Film

I took two "throwaway" cameras to China, to use in the evenings so I didn't have to faff around with a flash on my own camera. Was definitely better in that I could "point and shoot" more readily in a drunken state, but the results were mixed... The flash wasn't really powerful enough for shots at a distance, so a lot of the pictures on these two films are dark and grainy.

Here are the decent ones from the second film, mostly the latter few days in Beijing.

This is the team, the guys that made it happen. Standing ovation, please.

Seated we have: Kim, who works in the appeals office at the National Star Centre; Anthony, the Director of Appeals at NatStar, and the biggest Wall Nut you'll ever meet; Harriet, the trek doctor, Cathy from Silk Steps, the Bristol firm which arranged the trek; and Anita, the trek leader.

Standing we have: Gill, the trek co-ordinator, who gets a standing ovation all of her own; and Harry, our venerable guide.

Oli and Rich, resplendent in victory as they accept their prize for hardcore drinking above and beyond the limits of common sense. Those about to have a really bad hangover, we salute you.

The teutonic trekkers

Here's a good example of why I'm disappointed with my throwaway cameras - the flash just wasn't powerful enough to light these boys up, which is a terrible shame.

Yes, those are shower caps on their heads... This is Hugh and Bob, presenting their sketch, "The Teutonic Trekkers" to the assembled masses. A short but touching piece in which a pair of German hikers gave us foolish British types instructions on how to climb the wall. If only we'd had it at the start of the trek and not the end, their efforts to correct our ways might not have been in vain. :-)

Um... What's going on here?

OK, I think this is Becca and Becca either trying to tickle, or trying to place ice down the back (or front) of Laura (I think that's Laura!). Come on girlies, calm down now, or better still, pick on someone more deserving of such a grisly fate.

Oh, and I just love Lola's face in this photo...

Ah yes, the old "icecubes down the back of the neck" ploy. Go get him, girls!

Don't try to shut her up, there's just no point... Note pained expression on Llew's face.

This is our Peking Duck banquet on the penultimate night. The chap in the hat is slicing the duck up into many, many ickle pieces very quickly. Yummy.

Are those things toffee apples?

Yes, they are... And she's lifting them from the bowl one by one, with the chopsticks, and dipping them in water. She's doing this because if she doesn't, they stick together. In fact, they were starting to stick together again pretty quickly so we had to snaffle them fast - which we duly did.

I wonder what she's thinking...

Here I am receiving my certificate from William Lindesay, who ran the wall from west to east in 1987. Nice chap!

There's a better shot here, by the way.

Here I am receiving my certificate from William Lindesay, who ran the wall from west to east in 1987, and actually looking at the camera this time.

Check out his website and buy his book. Go on, do it now!

Damn... Probably the most eagerly anticipated photo I took, and it falls prey to the feeble flash problem. Boo, hiss. Ah well, I shall treasure it always anyhow. Check out those sexy boots.

Awww, innit sweet... Andy & The Hat, somewhat worse for wear, and trying to forget that we're going home the next day... :-)
